US Black Heritage Project

The purpose of this page is to assist US Black Heritage Project members with working on living project notables. Please see the WikiTree guidelines for living notables for general rules for working with these profiles on WikiTree.

Projects and Project Members should think of themselves as acting on behalf of the living notable person.

Ask yourself: what would I want to read in an internationally viewable public biography about me?

FAQs

Who Can Create USBH Living Notable Profiles?

  • Close family members (within 2 degrees) or family members who have written permission from that notable.
  • USBH members who have been certified to work with living notables.
  • Notables Project members who have been certified to work with living notables by the Notables Project or USBH Project.

Who Can Manage USBH Living Notable Profiles?

Only those people who are qualified to create living notable profiles (see above) can co-manage them or be on the trusted list.

Who Can Edit USBH Living Notable Profiles?

Only those people who are qualified to create living notable profiles (see above) can edit living notable profiles. A case by case exception will be made by the USBH leadership team.

What's Not Allowed In Living Notable Biographies?

  • Do not include names of any living family members unless they are also notable or that relationship is known widely publicly.
  • Never name minor children or relatives.
  • Do not include identifying information for living family members who qualify to be named. (ie: birthdate and location, where the person goes to school, where they currently live, etc).
  • Do not include controversial information. Use your best judgement. If you're not sure if something is controversial, check with a team leader.
  • Do not include any content that we can reasonably expect the person themselves would not want to see on WikiTree.

What is Allowed In Living Notable Biographies?

  • Certain personal data fields are automatically private on profiles of living people. This includes the formal first name, full middle name, exact birth date, and place of birth. However, this information may be revealed in the biography if it is already known widely publicly.
  • Names of family members who are known publicly or are deceased.
  • Basic background information about their growing up years if it does not go against the "do nots" list from above.
  • Interesting facts about them that wouldn't be considered private.
  • How they rose to fame.
  • Their accomplishments.

Can I Work on Non USBH Living Notables?

Being certified by the USBH Project or the Notables Project to work on living notables allows you to create and work on USBH notables. However, you should check with other projects you wish to create living notables for before beginning. (Information pending on which permissions Notables Project certification grants)

Processes for Members Certified to Work on Living Notables

Please do not create profiles for living USBH notables until you have been certified by either the USBH Project or the Notables Project to do so.

Creating The Profile

  • First look at the living notables tab on the USBH Notables Spreadsheet to double check they don't already have a profile.
  • If they don't have a Wikipedia page, please check with a USBH Notables Team Leader before creating the profile to make sure they qualify as notable per USBH rules. If they do have a Wikipedia page, proceed.
  • It's okay to create a profile for any living notable, whether they qualify for public viewing or not. A Project Leader will determine if the profile can be opened for public viewing and take the appropriate actions if they do.
  • Create the profile.
  • Add the required items for any notable profile including the USBH Project box. It's okay if you choose to create a stub profile for others to later expand or to create a full biography with many sources.
  • Add USBH as co-manager using the project email address. Ask for this email address if you don't have it.
  • Once USBH has been added as co-manager, you can remove yourself if you wish, however, don't forget you will lose editing access to that profile.
  • Add the profile to the proposed notables tab on the USBH spreadsheet and someone from the Notables Team will take the next steps. If the notable qualifies for a viewable profile, a Project Leader will change the privacy setting.

Answering Profile Comments

If you co-manage a living notable profile, you will receive notifications when someone comments on the profile. Feel free to reply to the comment if you have the answer, but this is not required. Someone from the USBH Notables Team will take care of any unanswered comments and questions. We would prefer to take care of any comments or questions that aren't regarding superficial edits because there is often more involved than a simple reply.

Trusted List Requests

Once USBH has been added as co-manager, please do not accept or respond to any trusted list requests for living notable profiles. USBH will evaluate each request and take action accordingly.

Adding Photos

Per the USBH Project guidelines and WikiTree terms of service, only add copyright free photos to profiles. The USBH Project generally does not use "fair use" photos, but especially not with living notables.

Permission from photographers to use photos they own the copyright to is acceptable as long as either the photo was taken in a public area where privacy is not implied, or if in a private location, the photographer obtained a "model release" from the notable. A model release gives the photographer permission to use the photo in any manner they choose (or in a specific manner in some cases).

Attaching Living Family Members

Per the USBH Project guidelines and WikiTree terms of service, do not add any living family members to a notable. Rare exceptions are made for connection purposes, but this should be done only by the project. If you need a family profile created, please contact one of the Notables Team Leaders listed below. They will first determine the need, then create the profile. Only the USBH Project (and immediate family members) will manage or be on the trusted list for any living family members. No exceptions will be made.

Editing A Living Notable You Don't Manage

If you are certified to work on living notables managed by USBH (whether public or not), please click on the trusted list request link for that profile to be added temporarily while you make improvements. When you are finished with your work, please remove yourself from the trusted list. If you wish to remain on the trusted list for a particular reason, please contact one of the Notables Team Leaders listed below.
